Current Costs & Installation Tidbits

Here are some tips and factors to consider when comparing car battery pricing.

  • Pricing is based on the make and model of your vehicle, where it’s purchased, and installation method.
  • You can expect to pay around $200+ for a standard flooded lead acid car battery and around $250+ for a premium AGM.
  • After a replacement, some vehicles need program resets for clocks, radio presets, power windows, and even a vehicle's computer system.
  • Some vehicles require a Battery Management System (BMS) reset after replacing the battery. This requires the use of a diagnostic tool either by a knowledgeable installer or a dealership.

What to consider when buying a new car battery:

  • Comprehensive warranty and coverage terms.
  • Price and battery size matters.
  • Selecting the appropriate Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), and Cranking Amps (CA) for your car.
  • Hold down clamps.
  • Battery freshness (manufacturing date and maintenance level).

The primary function of the battery is to provide power to the vehicle’s starter and to power the vehicle accessories when the engine isn’t running, including stop-start systems that turn off the engine when coming to a standstill. The battery also supplies additional power to the vehicle if load requirements exceed the alternator output.

The alternator in your vehicle is designed to maintain the charge level of the battery during normal use, but it is not designed to charge a completely discharged battery.

  • Corrosion/oxidation: This can lead to overheating and charging issues.
  • Climate: Heat shortens the life of the battery and severe cold can put additional strain on your battery.
  • Storage: Automotive batteries are designed to be used on a regular basis. Not driving the vehicle for extended periods will cause the battery to discharge and shorten its life. A battery maintainer should be used if your vehicle isn’t going to be driven regularly.

In North America, an automotive battery typically lasts 3-5 years.

Yes, AAA provides a nationwide, limited 3-year free replacement warranty.

The AAA battery warranty applies to AAA branded batteries only. The warranty covers battery failure resulting from manufacturer defects only and does not cover premature failure due to neglect, damage or abuse of the battery.

The warranty does not apply in the following cases:

  • The battery is merely discharged but still serviceable. (Not driving the vehicle for extended periods will cause the battery to discharge and shorten its life. A battery maintainer should be used if your vehicle isn’t going to be driven regularly).
  • The container, covers, or terminals are broken.
  • The battery has been frozen or damaged due to neglect or abuse.
  • The battery is damaged due to over or undercharging.
  • The battery fails because of fire, collision, wreckage, explosion or because of a faulty electrical system.
  • The battery is used in applications for which it was not designed or is installed or charged in reverse polarity.

If the vehicle ownership is transferred to another AAA Member, that battery warranty will transfer. The battery warranty will not transfer if the battery is moved to another vehicle or if the vehicle’s ownership is transferred to a non-AAA Member.

Use a battery maintainer to preserve the longevity of your battery.

Have your battery checked at each service interval and avoid extended periods of time with the engine off and the ignition on, especially if using accessory chargers for cell phones, air compressors, etc.
