What is the difference between a passport & passport card?

A passport or passport card is required for both departure from and re-entry to the U.S. Every citizen must have a valid passport — even babies. A passport is valid for 10 years if issued to a person 16 or older, but only five years if the person was 15 or younger when issued.

  • Standard Passport
    All persons are required to present a standard passport if traveling by air outside the U.S. Your passport will be needed for the majority of land and sea travel destinations as well.
  • Passport Card
    These are valid for land and sea travel between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda (not for international air travel).

Ensure you receive your passport in time

AAA Travel Agency can assist you with your passport photos and application. However, only the U.S. Department of State can actually issue a U.S. passport.

Don't delay! You should submit your passport renewal or apply for a new passport several months in advance of your planned departure as it typically takes 10-13 weeks for processing, sometimes more depending upon the situation.

Most full-service AAA Branch locations will provide you with a set of passport photos for a fee.

All travelers who wish to obtain a U.S. passport must provide a regulation-sized photograph at time of application. The photo must be in color and measure exactly 2 inches by 2 inches. AAA Member passport photo fees are:

  • AAA Classic/Everyday Member: $8 per set of two.
  • AAA Plus Member: First two sets are free to you and each of your minor children (age 15 and under).
  • AAA Premier Member: All sets are free to you and each of your minor children (age 15 and under).
  • Non Member: $12 per set of two.

International Driving Permit

An International Driving Permit, often referred to as an International Driver’s License, is valid in 150 countries worldwide. It serves as both a driver’s license and ID, containing your name, photo and driver information in 10 languages. An IDP is available through select AAA offices.

AAA is one of only two private entities in the U.S. authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue an IDP. An IDP is recommended for international travelers — even if you are not planning to drive. Some countries require an IDP. IDPs may only be issued a maximum of six (6) months in advance of the desired effective date.

How to Apply for an IDP

To obtain an International Driving Permit, you will need to provide:

  • Download and fill out an application, and bring it to a AAA branch office that offers IDP service. (Please check in advance to ensure IDP services are offered.)
  • Two original passport pictures (Many AAA branch offices offer photo services. Please check in advance.)
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license
  • Pay a $20 USD permit fee

If you are not able to visit a AAA branch office with IDP services, your IDP can be obtained through the mail. Simply mail the following to the AAA office nearest you offering IDPs (check locally for availability and payment options):

  • Your completed IDP application
  • Two original passport pictures each signed on the back
  • $20 USD permit fee
  • A photocopy of both sides of your driver’s license
